LG Optimus Black is Slim, Light and Powerful : In The Flesh Photos!

Posted: 06 Oct 2011 09:38 AM PDT
"LG Optimus Black reflects our core strengths of advanced technology, in both display and design, offering the world's brightest screen and the world's slimmest design in an attractive and smart package," shares Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, on one of the most gorgeous handsets the company has ever released.

Measuring only 9.2 millimeters at its thickest point and weighing just 109 grams, LG Optimus Black is easily the world's slimmest and lightest smartphone with the world's brightest mobile screen. LG Optimus Black's NOVA display is designed by the Korean company to be the brightest, clearest, most readable and most energy-efficient among mobile displays with its 700 nits of brightness for optimal visibility. NOVA also delivers higher levels of brightness in pure white tones - mostly used in the mobile browser - for ideal handset viewing. It's really amazing how a smartphone so thin and sleek can have a screen so bright.

Even at the lowest brightness setting, the screen is still - well - this bright.

What I particularly love about LG Optimus Black is that it's so slim, it fits seamlessly in my pocket when I go out to have fun outdoors with my friends. I'm not really a fan of carrying a bag when I'm out and about, all of my friends know that. So what I do is that I just put the things I know I'll be needing for the day - my wallet, smartphone, perfume, mint, and cards - in my jeans' front pockets before stepping out of the house. And thanks to LG Optimus Black's svelte and ultra-thin frame, my pocket still has all the stuff I need but it's now less bulky.

I also find that LG Optimus Black's features make it an ideal phone for chilling with folks under the sun. As I said, this handset may be thin but its NOVA screen is so bright, you'll see the display clearly even under strong sunlight! Use LG Optimus Black's 5 MegaPixel camera to shoot outdoor photos with family and friends, browse and even edit photos right on the phone (you don't have to get inside the house or in a building just to see the screen better), and instantly share the shots on Facebook and Twitter via mobile connection.

So there. When you can, check out LG Optimus Black in an LG Store near you.

Earlier this week, Smart Communications sent me THIS for review:

smart bro rocket plug-it

It's their Smart Bro Rocket Plug-It Prepaid Dongle.

So what's hot about this broadband stick? What sets it apart from all others? Well, according to Smart, it runs under 4G HSPA+ connection with speeds of up to 12 mbps, which is supposed to be the fastest in mobile prepaid broadband today. So far, Smart already has 653 HSPA+ sites nationwide -- so I guess I shouldn't find it hard to look for a spot to test if it really delivers 4G speeds. And you know how it is here in TP; We tell it like it is.

Anyway, before I give you my full review, here are a few photos of the Rocket Plug-It dongle as well as the other stuff that are in the box.

It has a 'slide to open' case.

So there. You can get this plug-it for just a onetime free of Php 3,995. Then you just need to pay Php 10 per 30 minutes of 4G connection.

More about this on TP soon. I'll visit two HSPA+ sites and test if the dongle will give me the promised 4G speeds.

There are practically only two things that make this year's iPod Touch refresh different from last year's release:

1. It runs iOS 5 right out of the box.
2. It comes in White.

So I hope you understand if I tell you that I'm not all that comfortable calling it a 'next generation' device. I mean, come on. It's practically the same iPod Touch that The Late Great Steve Jobs introduced last year. (TP Friends, if you remember, I was so amazed with iPod Touch 4G and Steve Jobs' Keynote last year, I actually got one from Power Mac Center. I know. How time flies.)

Anyway, I still think the device looks amazing - it's very thin but it's made of glass and metal making it quite durable - and specs are OK too. (Scroll down to see the full technical specifications table.)

Quoting Steve Jobs himself, "iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone." So if you're on a tight budget and you want to experience some of the benefits of owning an iPhone, then you might want to start with an iPod Touch.

I want to remember Steve Jobs not as the physically weak and frail man that he had been in the latter years of his life. I want to remember him as the strong, vibrant visionary who spearheaded the creation of some of the greatest gadgets the world has ever seen.

I want to remember Steve as a man whose every word inspires the people around him. And so, in memory of Apple's great CEO, here are 8 of my favorite Steve Jobs quotes:

1. "Almost everything -- all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure -- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

2. "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

3. "I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life."

4. "Some people say, 'Oh God, if [Steve Jobs] got run over by a bus, Apple would be in trouble.' And, you know, I think it wouldn't be a party, but there are really capable people at Apple. My job is to make the whole executive team good enough to be successors, so that's what I try to do."

5. "Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected."

6. "Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations."

7. "That's been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity [in design]. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it's worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains."

8. "Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful -- that's what matters to me."

Farewell, Steve Jobs! Thank you for everything you've shared with us!

It is with a heavy heart that I must share the sad news that the legendary Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, has passed away.

One of the visionaries to forever change the world, Steve Jobs, succumbed to the complications of his pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2011. He was 56 years old.

The whole TechPinas Community and I express our deepest condolences to his family and to everyone at Apple. And we thank him for his contributions to humanity.

Without Steve Jobs, I don't think TechPinas would have even existed. Just as much as his vision - reflected in Apple's incredible product set and market leadership - has set a whole new standard by which we see and judge technology, Steve has taught me that nothing is impossible - for myself and for everyone - if we stay hungry, stay foolish, and think different.

Farewell, Steve Jobs! You will be deeply missed.
