How to Mark All Unread Gmail Messages Read in One Go - Step by Step Guide

Posted: 22 Jan 2012 04:09 AM PST

Call me OC or superstitious but one of my many rituals I do every start of the year - or start of the Chinese New Year for that matter - is to make sure that my inbox doesn't have unread emails. Yes, I want them all marked 'read'. For me, this symbolizes completion and fresh start.

Given that my business is based online and that I have lots of newsletter subscriptions sending me daily mails that I often don't get to read because of my busy schedule, keeping an inbox that doesn't have unread emails isn't particularly an easy task for me. In fact, prior to doing this procedure that I'm about to show you, I had more than 2,000 unread Gmail messages -- and a lot of those aren't really all that urgent or important. I didn't want to waste precious time clicking on them one by one to lessen the number so I'm happy that I found an easy way to clear the unread count in one go.

If you have thousands of 'rather unimportant' mails in your Gmail inbox waiting to be marked read and you want to perform the same ritual to start the Chinese New Year, here's how you do it in 3 easy steps:

1. On your Gmail Search box, type "is:unread" and click the button. On the results page, tick the box on the upper left to select all results. You will then get a notification on top saying, "All 20 conversations on this page are selected, [with the link] Select all conversations that match this search." Click on the link.

2. After that, click on "More" drop-down menu button and select "Mark as Read".

3. If you're 100% sure you want to mark all unread messages in your Gmail inbox read, click OK on the pop-up window.

There you go, TP Friends! I hope you find this useful!
