NASA TV – Reality TV goes Sci-Fi on your Smartphone

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 09:59 AM PST

Okay, I'm not proud of it, and there seems to be so much of it you cant help but watch it sometimes. I'm talking about reality TV. I don't watch anything in particular, but for some reason if its playing in the background while I'm working, I get sucked in.. I haven't seen more than one or 2 episodes of any show, and I never tell anyone I've seen even a single episode, but I have… there's almost no way around it.

How how about THIS kind of reality? Two Russian cosmonauts will conduct a five-and-a-half-hour spacewalk, this Thursday,Feb 16th, in order to continue outfitting the International Space Station and, NASA Television will broadcast this spacewalk beginning at 7:45 a.m. CST. And best of all, the action can be viewed right on your computer, iOS or Smartphone.

Russian Flight Engineers Oleg Kononenkoand Anton Shkaplerov from Expedition 30, will be moving one of the two Strela cranes from Pirs, the oldest Russian airlock and docking module, to the newer Poisk docking module. The 46-foot boom will be used for future assembly and maintenance work. The duo will also install five debris shields on the Zvezda service module and, if time permits, a small experiment on the forward section of the module, an experiment sample pack on Poisk and support struts on the Pirs ladder.

Both spacewalkers will wear Russian Orlan suits bearing blue stripes and be equipped with incredibly awesome NASA helmet cameras. They will emerge from the Pirs airlock at about 8:15 a.m. This spacewalk will be the 162nd for the purpose of space station assembly and maintenance. The last spacewalk occurred Aug. 3, 2011. For Kononenko, it will be his third spacewalk following two in July 2008 during Expedition 17. His two previous spacewalks lasted a total of 12 hours and 12 minutes. It will be Shkaplerov's first spacewalk and the only one scheduled during Expedition 30.

I don't know about you guys, but this kind of reality TV sends real shivers down my spine…of course I can almost guarantee that no one is going to drink too much and start throwing things or quit… but one can dream…

Xappr – You Knew your Smartphone would Help you Defend the Earth

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 08:47 AM PST

First, I must confess something, I do NOT have an iPhone. Let me say it again for those of you shaking their head in disappointment and disbelief (and the rare few among us applauding gently) In fact, I don’t own a Smartphone of any kind. I guess I like to delude myself into thinking I’m smart enough all by myself, and while I dabble in iPads and Android tablets and some cloud browsing, I have yet to turn my life over to my phone, although I considered it this weekend, and I consider it everytime I find out about things like the Xappr.

Please allow me to introduce you, the Xappr is a soon to be available Smartphone accessory that allows you to play amazing augmented reality games on your phone! Available as the Xappr and Micro-Xappr these weapons of mass destruction will allow you to conquer invading alien armies and take down alien spacecraft all with your super powerful iPhone.

The Xappr folks have already developed about 10 augmented reality games, including ones that let you hunt down ghosts, eliminate alien spacecraft, hunt zombies and shoot down flying robots and in the spring, look for a release from MetalCompass that will enable awesome player-to-player combat with both the Xappr and Micro-Xappr guns that will include deathmatch, last man standing and team mode.

See? If I knew I could engage in something called “Deathmatch” on a phone, I would have ditched my beloved flip-phone years ago. Even though I’m pretty sure I can only play the games in my house, let’s  face it, waving my iPhone gun around in the subway may not be the best of ideas… although it’ll probably dramtically increase my chances of getting a seat!

The Xappr guns will be available this spring for customers from the US, EU, Isreal and Canada , You can get a discount by pre-ordering from the www.xapprgun.com website for around 30 bucks.

The Best Commuter Cup

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 05:30 AM PST

Making the daily commute can prove to be quite a nightmare for some of us, especially when there are massive traffic gridlocks to think about as you are stuck in your car, while those who prefer to get a taste of how sardines feel like in a tin can always give the public transport grid a go. Either way, you can always soothe your nerves with your favorite beverage – and those who want to bring their hot coffee with them wherever they go can always consider the $29.95 Best Commuter Cup.

Not only is this model extremely easy to drink from even when you are traveling, it also does not leak when inverted. This is a truly spill-proof lid (works best when you screw it on properly, that goes without saying), where a simple button press will open up the lid to make it easier to drink. There is a reason why there are no handles on the Best Commuter Cup – this is to make sure it can fit in a car’s cup holder without missing a beat. Hot water poured within decreases in temperature by only 18º F after two hours, which means it retains heat far better than other models in the market.

iBuku Pets ensure old smartphones can last longer

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 04:30 AM PST

Toy company Arbor Cube knows that with many people making the jump to smartphones, our landfills will soon see more and more smartphones compared to featurephones, although the latter is still extremely popular among developing countries and emerging nations. That is why they have come up with a solution which might just change the way we teach our little ones about being environmentally friendly – that is through the introduction of iBuKu Pets.

iBuKu Pets are said to bring together elements of technologically inclined toys that deliver meaningful play, coupled with a huggable device protector as well as an environmentally-responsible message in order to encourage folks not to throw away their ‘old’ smartphones whenever a new model is introduced by a mobile carrier. After all, I am quite sure that the Galaxy Nexus S still works fine, and you are able to continue your life just as well without upgrading it to the Galaxy Nexus, but that does not seem to be what companies want you to head towards to, bombarding you with more and more advertisements of newer devices.

iBuKu Pets will boast a soft body which can expand to hold either a smartphone or an iPod touch. On the outside, the cushiony shell offers protection for its fragile electronics within, and will come in numerous characters that kids will fall in love at first glance. Not only that, there are also plenty of practical applications such as doubling up as a nightlight, alarm clock, wireless battery charger, still and video camera, music player and educational toy which is suitable for those aged from 3 to 12.

At first, only a couple of patent-pending models will make an appearance, where the base model features the doll only alongside an upgraded version that has an internal battery and wireless charging which can benefit smartphones – older or new ones. Future plans point towards the ability for iBuKu Pets to grow with their child. No idea on how much it will cost though, but anything to save the planet, no?

Oregon Scientific MEEP! tablet for kids

Posted: 13 Feb 2012 04:00 AM PST

Take a look around you the next time you board the bus or metro during rush hour – how many people are actually using a smartphone or a tablet, regardless of whether they are standing up or sitting down, compared to those who hold an old fashioned book? The answer would be, “Plenty.” That comes across as no surprise either, since there has been massive efforts to get ordinary folk like you and I to make the jump to a smartphone by ditching our once faithful featurephones, not to mention supplement our gadget lifestyle by throwing in a new tablet into the mix as well.

Oregon Scientific knows this, and decided to target the younger generation with the MEEP! tablet. Of course, we do know that kids are not exactly the best custodians of shiny new gadgets, so it makes perfect sense that Oregon Scientific has specially constructed the MEEP! tablet to cater for this particularly boisterous crowd. The MEEP! tablet is also Wi-Fi enabled, where it will be powered by Google’s Android operating system, which means it is decent enough to deliver music, movies, e-books, and apps from leading developers, showing the entire works on a generous 7″ color touchscreen display.

This means that you as a parent, need not worry any more about your kids mucking around with your tablet, rearranging your carefully placed icons all over the place, or even deleting some apps without consulting you first. It comes with a tough design and an enhanced rubber silicon sleeve for added protection. As long as your kid is aged 6 and above, the MEEP! tablet should get the job done. It augments the internal memory with an SD memory card slot, while you can view it from any angle courtesy of the tablet’s internal G-Sensor.

Since kids will be using the MEEP! tablet most of the time, parents can always make sure their charges do not stumble upon anything out of the ordinary or obscene, since all websites and content can be monitored via intuitive parental controls which can be adjusted remotely on any computer or mobile device using an ordinary browser over the Internet.
