Smartphone Toothbrush? Really?

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 08:14 AM PST

There are just certain things that I feel need to remain “old school” my bathroom habits are but a few of them, I mean, I really don’t care what new fangled way they come up with… to do, well, whatever it is we do in there. I’m not having it. I don’t want to try it. I don’t want to hear about it, and writing about this next gadget is as close as I’m gonna get. Of course you all know that this is just the beginning, the Smartphone is officially encroaching on our bathrooms, be forewarned.

What we have here is the worlds first high tech toothbrush, called The Beam. It is a non-motorized toothbrush that will connect to your android device via Bluetooth. Bluetooth? even that seems a bit off, ya think? Anyhow, this device functions as a timer, making sure you brush your pearly whites for the optimal period of time, it starts timing when you start brushing and provides data when you’re done.

But wait! That’s not all, it can also track up to four “brushers” (Hopefully not on the same toothbrush) and will give you a high tech graphical analysis of every-body’s tooth brushing for the entire week and seamless wireless uploads. I knew I was missing something in my life, I just didn’t know what it was until now. Sigh.

All joking aside, I guess I can see some practicality of this device being marketed towards children, If I had a dollar for every time I had to march my daughter back to the bathroom for a second brushing I’d be rich. Having a little printout and a reward system does have some merit, especially in a larger family… I don’t know if that’s the plan,  but like I said, I’d just as soon keep high tech out of my bathroom, It was my last bastion of privacy and relaxation…I’m afraid of what comes next. Really I am.

The Beam will be available in Blue and pink and probably run you about 50 bucks.

Continuance Batteries – Give AND Take via USB

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 07:37 AM PST

We’ve all been there, completely immersed in a long involved phone call and you hear the dreaded battery-beep. “Are you getting another call?” asks the person on the other end. “No, my battery is going dead.” and then you look around frantically, hoping that by some stretch of luck an electrical outlet will magically appear… and more often than not, it never does. You inform the other party that you are going to lose them, defeated, and ashamed.

Well here is a concept that I really hope comes to pass, The Continuance Battery — designed by Haimo Bao, Hailong Piao, Yuancheng Liu and Xiameng Hu, this rather ordinary looking AA battery isn’t so ordinary after all. Not only is it an earth friendly rechargeable battery that can traditionally power any AA hungry device, but it is charged via USB AND has the ability to add some emergency power to any device that can be charged via USB as well!

“Can you hear me now?” Anyway, it’s only a concept at the moment, but it seems like one of those ideas that could change lots of things, and it would certainly be easy to rotate out a spare Continuance battery in my glove compartment or purse and always have an extra bit of juice when I need it. I don’t know how many times I’ve been searching for a free outlet in a restaurant or movie theater. I don’t often venture into the wilderness, but I guess it would be handy there too!

There has been some discussion about higher discharge rates and lower capacity due to the extra circutry, Blah blah blah, I’m not sure I understand most of it, my electronics knowledge barely extends past a rousing game of “Operation” but I sure hope these guys can figure it out, because I need a few dozen.

LEGO Insulated Lunch Bag

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 05:30 AM PST

LEGO – this unique Danish export is definitely one of the more creative toys that was ever released to the masses, and is highly popular even until today. Who would have thought that carefully constructed blocks could actually be pieced together to end up as a unique masterpiece? Well, LEGO has since spawned off more than just movie franchises with their toys, but have also started to earn money from video games through the LEGO-ization of different titles, ranging from the Harry Potter series to the Star Wars saga. Today, you can bring your lunch in a LEGO minifig’s blown-up head – in the form of the £12.99 LEGO Insulated Lunch Bag.

At least this is a LEGO head and not that of a human, so carrying a severed body member like this around is not all that disgusting, and no one else around you has to lose their appetite for lunch. You can stuff hot sandwiches and burittos inside, and the insulation should do enough to make sure at least you have a warm lunch by the time the clock strikes noon. A mesh pocket and secret compartment inside helps you stash away those flat LEGO pieces as an emergency.

Swimmer’s Talking Heart Rate Monitor

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 05:00 AM PST

Heart rate monitors are dime a dozen, but how many of them actually talk to you so you need not waste time by taking a glance at it? Well, things are about to change here, with the $179.95 Swimmer’s Talking Heart Rate Monitor. Of course, looking at your heart rate monitor on the wrist while swimming is going to do nothing but slow you down due to missing a stroke cycle, but with the Swimmer’s Talking Heart Rate Monitor, all of that changes. You can concentrate on slicing through the pool and racking up those laps, while letting this diminutive device that makes you look like a spawn of the Borg speak to you.

You do not even need to wear a telemetry strap or wrist watch, as this 100% waterproof monitor’s clip will attach to an ear lobe that enables it to detect pulse using infrared technology. The bone conduction principle is used to transmit audio to the wearer through the cheek bones into one’s inner ear – similar in nature to Aliph’s Jawbone Bluetooth headset that we have seen in the past. You can choose to have it announce your heart rate in intervals of 5-, 10-, 20-, 30-, or 45-seconds to 1-, 2-, and 5-minutes.

Nikon announces my Picturetown

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 04:30 AM PST

Nikon’s latest image sharing and storage service is known as my Picturetown, where it delivers a host of new functions to boot. This is the most recent version that delivers a greater amount of collaboration with Facebook, enabling users to post links to shared albums directly to Facebook. Not only that, you are able to utilize your list of Facebook friends in order to send links to shared albums, apart from posting to or playing Motion Snapshot files from Facebook itself. Just what is Motion Snapshot? Well, this feature will propose a new form of imaging expression, where it is based on Nikon’s latest advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses, which would be the Nikon 1 J1 and V1.

Apart from that, you can expect new functions thrown into the mix for those who are part of the Gold Account fraternity (members who fork out a fee for additional storage space), and one of those new functions would be the ability to password protect shared albums.

When you are in Motion Snapshot mode, all you need to do is press the shutter-release button to record a still image as well as approximately a second of high-resolution, slow-motion movie footage that begins prior and ends after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. When you play a movie footage at 0.4x normal speed, the still image, and background music, Motion Snapshot will enable users to express impressive moments that offer the minute changes in expression. Guess your home movies will end up being even more professional than ever before!

Anyone out there who feel that Facebook is becoming more and more bloated with all the apps introduced for it? The Facebook experience is getting more and more integrated with so many other services and apps, that logging on to find out what your mates are up to isn’t the only thing to do these days. Sometimes, simplicity is king – what do you think?

Posted: 17 Feb 2012 04:00 AM PST

Nokia has been given a new lease of life in their partnership with Microsoft, bringing the Windows Phone operating system to the forefront with their Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 smartphones, while relegating Symbian to the back seat. The former will continue to grow in stature, while the latter is set to be more and more obscure. Well, Microsoft and Nokia have come together to announce a spanking new bundle of Nokia devices that will be available on an exclusive basis at Microsoft Store locations around the US.

The Nokia Lumia 800 Entertainment Bundle is set to be officially displayed from February 26 onwards, but store representatives of Microsoft are able to offer an early edition to folks whose patience is not their strongest virtue. We shall take a closer look at what Nokia’s Entertainment Bundle will deliver right after the jump.

Just what does the Nokia Lumia 800 Entertainment Bundle offer right out of the box? Well, you will get the best Nokia Lumia smartphone to date with the acclaimed Lumia 800 smartphone, and your ears will definitely enjoy the audio cues pumped out by the Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset by Monster. Want to go hands-free whenever you drive or are occupied in the kitchen? The Nokia Luna Bluetooth Headset will step in to fulfil the need here, and if you want to share your favorite tunes with your friends as well as strangers around, the Nokia Play 360° speaker would come in handy.

It is interesting to note that the special-edition bundle will arrive unlocked, sans a contract for $899, and you are able to choose from two color-coordinated collections – one that will feature just sleek black, while the other includes a white Play 360° speaker, whereas the remaining devices come in a vibrant magenta.
