Gazelle lets you Sell your iPhone from your iPhone

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 10:04 AM PDT

I already got my new iPhone. I realize there is a new one coming out pretty soon, but I convinced myself that the latest model had everything that I needed and I that I wasn’t rushing into anything. In the back of my mind, I know I’m going to want the new one. What is it about us humans that always wants a little bit of what we don’t have?

Well, a company called Gazelle is counting on it. We mentioned Gazelle before, as a pretty easy, fast and fair way for you to get some cash for your no longer loved electronics and now, they have made trading up even easier, with an app that when downloaded to your phone, will actually detect your iPhone model and provide you with an offer on the spot. You simply need to answer a few quick questions to accept your offer at checkout and then ship your phone off to Gazelle, postage paid and then wait for payday.

So now I have my backup plan… if I’m so enamoured by the yet-to-be-released new iPhone I’ll drop it like a hot potato. Gazelle also buys iPods, iPads some Macbooks, iMac, Mac Mini, Apple TV and a few other Smartphones. So if you were just waiting for a trade up that made financial sense, maybe this will help you feel just a tiny bit less guilty.

Check out Gazelle.com for more information, or download the app, available at the app store. (and don’t worry, Gazelle takes steps to ensure all your data is removed before they responsibly re-use or recycle your stuff) Phew!

Hillcrest Labs announces Freespace availability

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Hillcrest Labs has just announced the availability of Freespace for manufacturers and component suppliers of smartphones and tablets. With Hillcrest’s spanking new Freespace MotionEngine for Mobile, where this is an embedded software solution which will help one manage and enhance the combined performance of motion sensors that are frequently found in smartphones and tablets. We are talking about accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes here, allowing current motion-based applications to be ready to deliver next-generation user experiences.

According to Chad Lucien, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Hillcrest Labs, “The smartphone industry is at a key inflection point with motion control. Motion sensors are now standard in mobile devices, but today’s motion software implementations impose significant constraints that limit sensor choice, integration flexibility and performance. We aim to change that. Our Freespace MotionEngine for Mobile provides a unique software solution for Android™ and Windows® 8 smartphones and tablets, which delivers the highest performance and provides the most flexible integration options, while enabling manufacturers to use sensors from any major supplier in the market.”

Of course, we would be definitely interested in seeing just what Hillcrest Labs is able to cook up with the wider availability of Freespace – and the potential uses and applications will definitely be something worth looking into. For starters, the mobile industry currently has a specific set of sensor requirements, where among them include the need to work with a variety of sensor suppliers and application processors across multiple mobile operating systems, maintain low costs, minimize battery usage, and extract the maximum performance out of the available sensors.

As smartphones and tablets will continue to move forward in the wider use of different sensors, it makes perfect sense for the need for superior sensor fusion and calibration in order to improve accuracy and support more advanced applications. With Freespace MotionEngine for Mobile, you can be safe knowing that a necessary foundation for a variety of mobile applications is already available.

Nokia Lumia 900 arrives on AT&T in the US

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:30 AM PDT

Nokia’s latest smartphone that runs on the Windows Phone platform, the Nokia Lumia 900, will finally arrive Stateside via AT&T this coming April 8th for $99.99 a pop – with a new two year contract, of course. Touted to be one of the first 4G LTE Windows Phones in the world, the Nokia Lumia 900 will offer AT&T customers far more 4G LTE choices compared to the rest of the market.

Those who are unable to get your hands on the this new Nokia smartphone will be able to place a pre-order in either cyan or black from March 30th onwards by paying a visit to the following website – http://www.att.com/lumia, or just head on towards any AT&T company-owned retail store. Business customers who qualify for wireless service discounts will be able to place a pre-order for the Lumia 900 online, too.

Being able to run on AT&T's superfast 4G LTE network is definitely one of the winning points, and the Lumia 900 will come in an unique and eye-catching cyan blue and a matte black this coming April 8th, while those who prefer the recently announced high-gloss white version will be able to pick it up from April 22nd onwards.

According to Jeff Bradley, senior vice president – Devices, AT&T Mobility, "AT&T and Nokia's relationship spans many years and we're thrilled to introduce their first 4G LTE Windows Phone only for our customers. The Lumia 900 is impeccably designed with clean lines and a camera that rivals stand-alone digital cameras on the market today. Combine that with the people-first Windows Phone experience and our 4G networks – the nation's largest – and it's clear that this is one of the best phones customers can find."

Hardware specifications of the Nokia Lumia 900 include a 4.3″ ClearBlack AMOLED display, a 1,830 mAh battery, an 8-megapixel camera with Nokia’s exclusive Carl Zeiss optics, and also the Nokia Purity HD On Ear Stereo Headset by Monster.

Medisana TargetScale

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 08:00 AM PDT

When you watch sci-fi movies, you know for sure that future technology offers so much more than what current technology is able to achieve. We have hovering skateboards from Back to the Future, walking, talking and autonomous droids that are capable of replacing cheap human labor, the ability to travel through different galaxies thanks to the wonders of hyperspace and wormholes, and many more. I suppose if we could catch a glimpse of the future right now in your very own home, it ought to be enough – and the £129.99 Medisana TargetScale is an example to follow.

One look at it, and some might even think that this is some sort of next generation vacuum cleaner, instead of it being a bathroom scale. You will not find broken springs, stiff dials, inaccurate readings and a squeaky mechanism with the Medisana TargetScale though. It features Bluetooth connectivity alongside the ability to figure out your weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat and water, plus muscle and bone mass for up to four users. It can see action with the free VitaDock app for you to set goals and monitor weight changes wherever you are.

Aurora Dress lights up any ball

Posted: 26 Mar 2012 07:37 AM PDT

When it comes to fashion, you can more or less say that anything goes. After all, one can never quite tell just what will be the next big thing, I mean, I still look at bell bottoms today and wonder just what the heck were people thinking then? Enter the Aurora Dress that was specially designed by CuteCircuit, where it saw action in an opera performance hosted by Breitling, a luxury brand name that is from the Swiss watch fraternity. This dress will boast hundreds of Swarovski crystals and will also come embedded with LEDs which will light up in order to deliver a colorful and sparkly display.

Made out of silk taffeta and chiffon, the Aurora Dress’ design was inspired the natural phenomenon of the aurora borealis, where it resulted in a spectacular glow of colors in the night sky. No idea on whether it will make it to the real world though, since it will most probably be uber expensive.
