NZXT Phantom 410 Special Edition

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 07:23 AM PDT

When it comes to owning PC cases, most hardcore gamers who build their systems from scratch prefer nothing better than making sure the particular make and model that they purchase off the rack has the right kind of specifications to fit in the most updated video cards as well as Solid State Disks. If you happen to fall under that category or would like to bring home some hardcore gaming goodness in the form of a computer case, then I am quite sure you would not be able to be too far off the mark with the NZXT Phantom 410 Special Edition.

This particular PC case will be new color editions of the award-winning Phantom 410, where it will now feature even a sleek shade of Gunmetal Black. To put it in a nutshell, the voice of the majority is heard here, where NZXT actually polled the active Facebook community as to the kind of color combinations which were in highest demand by gamers and enthusiasts, and the top picks were selected in order to turn them into reality. Apart from Gunmetal Black, we are looking at Black with Orange Trim, Black with White Trim, and White with Blue Trim to whet your appetite.

The NZXT Phantom 410 Special Edition will continue from where the legendary Phantom 410 left off, offering even more value for each of your hard earned dollar spent. You will be able to find effective airflow management here, thanks to the ability to hold up to 7 fans – where a couple of 120mm and a single 140mm LED fan has already been thrown into the mix. There is also support for 240mm dual radiator water cooling solution, in addition to an integrated 30W fan controller that allows you to customize your system for silence or performance.

When it comes to performing additional hardware installation and upgrades, those are a cinch thanks to innovative right mounted HDD rails, where a removable HDD cage makes it a snap to stash in extended video cards, in addition to screwless 5.25" and HDD trays that are capable of securing a 2.5" SSD. Apart from that, there will also be USB 3.0 support in addition to an acrylic window which enables gamers to admire the power of their rig. Available later this month (there are just three more days to the month, in case you were wondering), the Phantom 410 will retail for $99.99 a pop.

Augmented reality greeting cards could be the future?

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 06:30 AM PDT

The greeting card business is something of a multi-billion dollar industry, and there are cards for just about any and every occasion, be it funerals, birthdays, marriages, being single again, going out for a date, a new baby, the list is virtually endless. Just how else do you think the greeting card industry is going to progress in the months and years ahead? We have already looked at sound chips being incorporated into such cards, playing back a jingle or song when you open it, or even snazzy holographic covers. Moonpig and Zappar have an entirely different idea though – their partnership is hoped to change the landscape of greeting cards forever, thanks to the incorporation of Augmented Reality technology from Zappar.

Moonpig is currently the online market leader of greeting cards, and this particular team up with Zappar, the leader in AR entertainment products, aim to offer customers the ability to create greeting cards which will see the incorporation of personal videos and messages from the 26th of March onwards on http://www.moonpig.com.

To get your very own greeting card out, the process is pretty simple – all you need to do is pick out a card on the Moonpig site, upload your video or personal video message, choose a still for the front of the card, and send it over the Internet to the intended recipient. The recipient will be able to do a whole lot more with the card by using the free Moonpig App (available from iTunes or the Android Market Place). This video will then play on your smartphone (or other compatible device) using Zappar's proprietary technology from the front of the card. Alternatively, you can always save it to your camera roll for future viewing.

This opens up yet another step for merging the digital world with physical products, and I am quite sure the marketing folks are going to have a field day with this. According to Caspar Thykier, Managing Director for Zappar said, "This will be the next step in how people receive and view greeting cards, providing purchasers and recipients with a whole new way of creating personal messages. We feel implementing AR in such an everyday item as a greeting card is a great way to use the Zappar platform. It really demonstrates how the technology can truly enable a product in a commercial context with a tangible consumer benefit."

Bandai outs their own robot dog

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Getting a dog is more often than not a dream of many a kid, but as parents find out after a while, only the most disciplined of children are able to ensure that the pooch in their possession remains under the right kind of care and responsibility, while majority of the other kids tend to leave the furkid in the care of parents, but maximizing the playtime potential instead. Bandai figured out that there might be a way to get your little one more involved in taking care of the dog – that is, by introducing a robot dog instead.

This particular robot dog will need a smartphone to function as its head and brain, and some might even say that it closely resembles Aibo’s general behavior pattern. The iPhone app will definitely be free of charge (in Japan, at least), where some of the other antics it is capable of include walking, dancing, singing, snapping photos and recording videos – and even better news is, it will not be able to chew on any shoes or slippers, too. No idea on whether it will arrive anywhere else outside of Japan or not though.

Salt Water Fuel Cell Giant Arachnoid Kit – Yikes!

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 05:15 AM PDT

I am sure most of you remember OWI’s award winning Salt Water Fuel Cell Car. Well I have to tell you that the second generation of this awesome technology appears to be that much cooler, unless your afraid of spiders! The Salt Water Fuel Cell Giant Arachnoid Kit gives once again gives our kids the opportunity to learn about new forms of clean energy, and they get to build and power their very own toy and then feed it some saltwater and watch it scurry away! *shudder*

This environmentally friendly concept seems to steer us in the right direction. Everyday our kids are learning about ways to help protect our Earth and keep our world clean. This nifty little guy demonstrates to our kids a much more effective utilization of our natural resources and its fun at the same time. Can’t go wrong there.

Anyway, almost all kids love a little creepiness and our eight-legged friend here certainly has ample “let’s scare mom” factor. After assembling and activating the fuel cell module with a saltwater mixture, the magnesium metal sheet (3 sheets included) will operate the Spider for up to 7 hours. If having a giant spider crawling around your living room ceases to be appealing, one needs to simply take out the fuel cell module and rinse with tap water and dry, no insecticides required.

The manufacturer tells us that all the materials used in this kit are environmentally safe and clean, non-toxic and carry no disposal concerns. It will not produce heat, so it is completely safe for child’s play. Available now for pre-order at owirobot.com for well under 20 bucks.

Stealth Tablet Envelope

Posted: 28 Mar 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater, or so the saying goes. I think it is time to update that particular phrase with this – don’t throw out your iPad with the Stealth Tablet Envelope! This £14.99 purchase will let you tote about your tablet incognito, although it would be best if you were to live alone. Otherwise, other people living under the same roof as you might think that this is trash, and throw out your tablet inside along with it! One great thing about such a disguise would be the ability to prevent opportunistic thieves from getting their hands on your tablet, as the ‘envelope’, from the outside, looks pretty standard issue, and most probably they would think that some documents are inside instead of a tablet.

If you want to up the realism ante, just stick a few stamps on it and you are good to go. Capable of holding tablets up to 27cm x 20.5cm in size, this is one low profile tablet case that you might want to look into if being understated is your cup of tea.
