Garmin does golf with new Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS Golf Watch

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 09:30 AM PDT

When the name Garmin is presented, what comes across your mind? Most of us would think that a GPS navigation system will be the topic here, but not for today. No sir, Garmin has something different in store for you – which is actually the new Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS Golf Watch. As the name suggests, this is one timepiece that deserves to see action whenever you are ready to tee off. Since golf is not only about lowering the number of strokes each time you play but will also touch on the issue of style, you can be sure that no one is going to question your fashion sense when you strap the Approach S3 around your wrist.

After all, it has been described to be stylish, coming in a rugged and waterproof form factor. This high-resolution glove-friendly touchscreen device will also be pre-loaded with 27,000 worldwide courses to begin with – and more information on newer courses will be added in the long run, where you need not fork out additional subscriptions or fees. If you want, you can wear the Approach S3 as a day to day timepiece, and whenever you are ready to tee off, you can then take advantage of its features such as Green View with manual pin positioning, distances to doglegs and layup points, customizable yardage points and digital scorecards.

This would mean golfers will be able to have a "virtual" caddie with them just about every stroke, without having to fork out money to hire one. Even better still, these virtual caddies will not come with any emotional baggage unlike regular caddies, which is always a good thing as emotions can always cloud one’s perception. The well heeled traveler who loves golfing around the world ought to find the Garmin Approach S3 Touchscreen GPS Golf Watch to be an essential item whenever they travel, since it will deliver free course updates throughout the year which will offer information on not only new courses, but enhancements to the current lineup as well. Out later this month, the new Approach S3 is tipped to retail for $349.99 apiece.

Dehydration Preventing Pedometer

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 08:30 AM PDT

When it comes to getting enough exercise, there is this device known as the pedometer that is capable of calculating just how many steps you have taken throughout the day, and some of the more advanced models are even able to let you know the number of calories which you have burned. Unfortunately for some of us, we might be so zealous in the battle against the bulge, so much so that we forget some of the basics of exercise – including drinking enough water to replenish our dehydrated selves. This is where the $74.95 Dehydration Preventing Pedometer comes into play, where it is smart enough to estimate the amount of fluid that you will lose during workouts, alerting you when it thinks that it is time to take a pause and rehydrate.

In order to have it function as accurately as possible, you will need to enter your gender, height, and weight. The pedometer is capable of automatically factoring in the temperature and relative humidity in order to predict fluid loss, sounding off an alarm whenever it is time to take a sip of water (although your favorite energy drinks might also work). A piezoelectric sensor will see action in tracking your activities, and it has also been clinically proven more accurate than spring-levered models. Any takers?

Earthquake Wallpaper – for when Your World is Falling Down around You

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:53 AM PDT

I used to live in California, I have felt my fair share of earthquakes, a short time after I first arrived in Los Angeles a quake woke me up from a dead sleep at around 7 o’clock in the morning. My chandelier broke, and my balcony actually fell from the apartment. My neighbors were standing in their doorways, afraid the walls would fall in on them and folks were trapped in our buildings elevator. Not one of my best mornings.

Luckily, German researchers have recently developed what they are calling, “seismic” wallpaper. This specially reinforced paper boasts the ability to  hold  masonry walls together and keep them from breaking, falling or crumbling when subjected to an earthquake. That could certainly make you feel safer, am I right?

Scientists at the Bayer MaterialScience used special stiff, high-strength glass fibers and wove them together to form a strong and flexible wall covering. The material has these fibers running throughout the “fabric” in four different directions, this allows the energy created by an earthquake  to distribute evenly and protect against damage.

The wallpaper is simply adhered to walls using a flexible, soft adhesive (called Dispercoll) made from water and a large amount of polyurethane beads. As the water evaporates, the special beads stick the paper to the walls. In essence producing a safety barrier between you, and a crumbling building.

The wallpaper has been tested in a replica house in an earthquake simulator, and because of this “paper” scientists were unable to cause the house to collapse at all. They also used a hydraulic press to crush a treated and untreated wall. The results were remarkable.Well over a billion people currently live in earthquake zones… There are a tremendous number of people that could be made safer, thanks to this new wallpaper.

The paper will be available globally sometime this year, but don’t look for it in your local hardware store,  but rather contractor suppliers. No word yet on cost, and I’m thinking, no choice of colors, stripes or flowers either.

Angry Birds Helicopter

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 12:01 AM PDT

It seems that Rovio has hit the motherlode with the Angry Birds franchise, and something tells me that it will be a very, very long time before Rovio is able to replicate the success of Angry Birds with a new franchise down the road. Their greatest blessing could very well be their Achilles’ heel as well, since nothing else that they make or manufacture might be able to measure up to the might of Angry Birds. It somewhat reminds me of Motorola and their hugely successful RAZR mobile phone, as every subsequent model after that failed to live up to the success of the RAZR, so much so that Motorola went on a decline.

Thankfully, they have Android to be grateful to in helping them back from the brink. But I digress – we are here to talk about yet another piece of merchandise to come out from the juggernaut of a well positioned mobile game – Angry Birds. The device in question? Why, none other than the Angry Birds Helicopter, of course!

After all, those feathered friends of ours tend to fly through the sky before the effects of gravity take its toll on them, and they come crashing down on structures and hopefully, pop some green pigs in the process. With the $49.95 Angry Birds Helicopter, however, their flight will be a whole lot more graceful. This remote controlled toy can see action regardless of whether you are indoors or outdoors, and is a snap to control as it responds without a snag to your commands.

Constructed in a sturdy manner, while boasting a durable plastic body, it is very well capable of surviving just about most high impact collisions and falls, even from carelessness. There is a control range of approximately 10 to 15 meters. The controller itself will run off half a dozen AA batteries, so it is best if you were to stick to a bunch of rechargeable batteries in the long run. Otherwise, it would be reliving the horror stories of a Sega Game Gear from all those years ago.

It takes around 40 minutes to juice up the Angry Birds Helicopter, which will in turn yield around 8 to 10 minutes of flying time. Good thing the Angry Birds Helicopter comes fully assembled out of the box, so there is no need for you to get your hands dirty.
